Biography
La Santa Cecilia exemplifies the modern-day creative hybrid of Latin Culture, Rock and World music. The six-member group creatively combines up-tempo Pan American rhythms like Cumbia, Bossa Nova, Rumba, nostalgic Boleros, passionate Tangos, Jazz, Rock and Klezmer music. They draw inspiration from all over the world and are proud to be from the City of Angels. Their all-encompassing sound has given them a unique identity as an up and coming Los Angeles breakthrough. The experience of their colorful sundry performance leaves fans and new listeners mesmerized.

The group consists of guitarist Gloria Estrada, accordionist and requintero Jose Carlos, bassist Alex Bendana, percussionist Miguel Ramirez, drummer Hugo Vargas and lead vocalist Marisoul, whose captivating voice sings about bittersweet love, loss and heartbreak. Six separate influences range from Miles Davis, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Mercedes Sosa and Ramon Ayala. The group’s common love of music and openness to all genres led to the concept of La Santa Cecilia in 2007 – named after the patron Saint of Musicians.

La Santa Cecilia’s six-song EP was recorded at Lo-Fi Studios in San Bernardino and Westlake Legendary Recording Studios in Hollywood. The song “Chicle” has been featured in television and film, on the Emmy award-winning Showtime series Weeds, the Brian Krinsky independent feature Dish, and the documentary Re-Encounters about Oaxacan artist Alejandro Santiago. Their music can also be heard on KPFK’s radio programs 4 O’clock Tuesday with Gustavo Arellano and Travel Tips For Aztlan with Mark Torres.

The band has thrilled audiences at local and international venues, such as, SXSW Music Festival, Grand Performances at The California Plaza, Ford Amphitheater, Levitt Pavilion, the Getty Center, the Japanese American Museum, The California African American Museum, the Los Angeles Accordion Festival, the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, the annual Dia De Los Muertos Festival at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and the Diego Rivera Museum in Mexico City.
The band’s CD artwork is hand-painted by friends, band members, and even some fans during painting parties that allow everyone to become part of the creative process. No two CD covers are the same. The combinations of colorful yarn, images and designs (now from recycled newspapers and magazines, making the product environmentally-friendly) are endless and have become a signature for the band. Not to mention the highly imaginative unicorns, donuts, cacti, sombreros and smiley-faced condoms shaped pins.

Through heartfelt music, homemade art and consistent live performances, La Santa Cecilia continues to connect with their fans; many of who feel the band represents exactly who they are, a new generation of cultural hybrids whose creativity has no boundaries.

Barking is the title of Underworld’s first album in three years, and their first to be constructed with a brilliant cast of co-conspirators. All the tracks were written by the band in their Essex studio before being given to handpicked studio heads from across the whole spectrum of dance music to add some of their style and creativity to the band’s raw material. The result is a pimped-up Underworld record and their finest collection of songs in over a decade.

From the first undulating pulses of submariner bass, the first vocals soft like a whisper in the ear – and the first fizz of hi-hats that force along the pace, the sound is unmistakably Underworld. Electronics wrapped effortlessly around songs; streams of consciousness lyrics that form indelible images; a perfectly balanced mix of melody and rhythm. Underworld’s sixth studio album is a thundering return to form, although it’s fair to say that the band responsible have never really been below par.

Underworld are Rick Smith and Karl Hyde. They have been working together in music for thirty years since meeting in Cardiff University in the late ’70s. Following time working in various bands with luminaries like Conny Plank, Iggy Pop and Debbie Harry, Smith and Hyde (with help from DJ Darren Emerson) began experimenting with making club music in the early ’90s, first as Lemon Interupt then reactivating one of their old band names – Underworld – releasing their first single proper, Mmm Skyscraper, I Love You, in 1993. As well as becoming the first band from the nascent dance scene to grace the cover of a weekly music paper, they scored massive critical hits with each of their album releases (Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Second Toughest In The Infants, Beaucoup Fish, One Hundred Days Off and Oblivion With Bells).

In 2005, Underworld released the Riverrun series, a trio of downloadable mixes of new material and works-in-progress, making them one of the first acts of their scale to attempt to directly sell their own records. Underworld’s continuing relationship with director Danny Boyle has seen their music used in many of his movies. In 1996 a former B-side track, Born Slippy (Nuxx), soundtracked an entire summer, selling close to a million copies when released as a single. They recently scored Boyle’s sci-fi movie Sunshine.

In the early ’90s Smith and Hyde helped co-found the design company tomato. Karl has recently worked extensively with Brian Eno on the collaborative Pure Scenius project, playing largely improvised gigs at Sydney’s Opera House and at the Brighton Festival.

Underworld remain one of the most innovative and dynamic live bands on the planet after a series of already announced Australian dates this June, they will be touring the album extensively towards the end of the year.

Bomba Estéreo make psychedelic cumbia and are from Bogotá, Colombia. The group, a musical project formed by Simón Mejía [w/ singer Liliana Saumet] in 2005, represent a new sound coming from Colombia. Their music merges folk sounds from the Colombian caribbean coast like cumbia, bullerengue and champeta mixed with electronica, reggae and hip-hop producing an explosive dance sound. Live shows involve 4 musicians combined with live video projections.

Kinky is a five member band from Monterrey, Mexico which consists of members Gilberto Cerezo, Ulises Lozano, Carlos Chairez, Omar Gongora, and Cesar Pliego.

Their music is a mixture of rock, dance, and techno, but the Latin influence pours through each song. They sing mostly in Spanish but some of their songs contain lyrics in English. They are signed with Sonic360 Records.

In the summer of 2002 they joined Cake, De La Soul, Flaming Lips, Hackensaw Boys, and Modest Mouse on the Unlimited Sunshine Tour in the U.S… “Mas”, from their self-titled debut, was used in commercials for the NBC Mexican mafia mini-series Kingpin, and Nissan.

On September 5, 2006, Kinky reappeared with reina, which contains great songs such as “León”, and “una línea de luz”. Kinky has toured in Mexico and the USA with bands such as Muse, Beck, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Shins; and were the principal attraction of a massive gig with The Donnas and rooney.

Benn Jordan, the man behind the project, combines real instruments and electronic programming to create rich soundscapes. His last album, Soundtrack to a Vacant Life, was a masterpiece covering many diverse genres including: IDM, post-rock, metal, and even flamenco.

We want to make music and keep making music and we want that music to be really very good. We’re using pop-forms and structures because we like songs; Kinks songs, Beatles songs, Michael Jackson songs; absorbing the lessons of the pop classics, folding the present into the past toward the future to create dub histories; Avant-pop split between the austere and feverish. We write together. One or the other brings in the foundation of a new track or lyrics and the two of us add to it, writing as we record, offsetting the precision of electronic production with analog machines and sweat. Party music, physical music, romantic music.

We came together when we bonded playing one another tracks. We were driving across the U.S. listening to Moroder/Moulton style disco; French House & minimal techno; Post-Punk favorites like Young Marble Giants, Wire, The Cure & New Order; Black Star, Dilla, De La Soul vintage hip-hop; 60’s mod, garage & girl groups and loads of Studio 1/Trojan era ska & dub. When we got back, we wrote ‘Dressed In Dresden’ over a couple of days in the studio. It was a fast, heavy, raw stomper. But, on our debut EP, ‘This Desert’, we show the other side. ‘This Desert’ is our stoop-hop side; it’s the more ethereal, gauzy side of our tastes. It’s got lots of dubbed out vocals, disco shivers and all the Summertime-Gothic dreamy bits.
