This weekend, the Music Box Theater in Chicago decided to extend the showing of the film by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa.

Theater: Find Hakamadare!

The new production by the Geopolis Theater Company is the Japanese story Find Hakamadare! by Fukuda Yoshiyuki, directed by owner Kristy Scheuer. The story has been compared to Robin Hood and tells the tale of friends setting out to do the work of their hero. Along the way, they learn valuable life lessons including things are not always what they seem.

The production will be held at the Japanese Culture Center, 1016 W Belmont, Chicago.

Michelle L’Amour Burlesque Studio

Since 2002, Michelle L’Amour (http://www.michellelamour.com/) has been mesmerizing the world with her “ass that goes POW.” She has instructed women on how to be comfortable in their own skin and made her studio a welcome place for both men and women. Ms. L’Amour also hosts a series of events where open-minded people can see the naked side of Chicago, including a monthly reading in the nude.

This month’s Naked Girls Reading featured “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. Warm temperature and a beautiful smile behind reception, welcomed attendees who immediately removed their coats and found seats in front of the red-lit couches. Once everyone was seated, the women strolled from behind a screen to the comfortable seats. Before the reading, Michelle signed the contract for her book due to be released in 2010, “Sexy Chicago.” She and the women then portrayed an artistic and tasteful reading of the holiday story. It was refreshing to hear the classic “Christmas Carol” with such softness and poise.

The Soshinkan dojo, a well established martial arts school in Burbank recently celebrated its 15 year anniversary by demonstrating some of the arts offered at the school. The dojo, who’s name translates as “Beginner’s Mind,” offers training in the arts of Aikido, Kenpo, Karate, Yoga and Zen Meditation. The school’s founder envisioned a place where people studying “the way” could do so under one roof. Each technique takes years to master but the results are almost poetic. the grace and and poise noticed in any martial artist is worth trying to attain. On top of mastering such an art, the dojo offers a place to meet like-minded people that have a sense of family on and off the mat.

Art gives attention to Women’s issues

The National Museum of Mexican Art is featuring a powerful exhibit, Rastros y Cronicas: Women of Juarez, which is shining light on an important women’s issue. The number of women killed in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico continues to increase. Artists portrayed their view on the violence against these women using traditional paint as well as detailed 3-dimensional displays. The pieces portray real women and girls who are either missing or lost their lives due to the violence in Mexico.

Artists on-site at Spy Bar worked to the last minute to decorate the models shown. Their bodies were covered in glitter, paint and the Telemundo logo. The ladies walked around the launch party for Acceso Total, a new half-hour show anchored by Nelly Carreño.

Latino Fashion Week

Last week, Chicago doubled Fashion Focus by hosting seven shows featuring Latino designers. The international event included a week of innovative fashion around the city starting with a Hair and Make Up show on Opening Day. Tuesday’s Student Competition was a race to win a spot in the week’s closing show on Sunday Nov. 8. The rest of the week, Retail Day, Millenial Day – Gen Y, Green Day, and International Showcase showed bold and flavorful fashions. Topping off the week was El Fin, the Chicago Designers and Awards Presentation.

Pilsen Open Studios

Dia de los Muertos display

Earlier this month, the artists in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood opened their doors to the public. Art displayed ranged from one-colored prints to a headboard with a burned image of “La Catrina” — also known as death according to Mexican Folklore. Many unique venues, including a gym and people’s own apartments displayed the array of color popping out of the art. The streets were busier than usual on the sunny Sunday afternoon in October. This annual event also brings artists from all over the city to see the culture of 18th Street. More information about the Pilsen Open Studios is located at http://pilsenopenstudios.org/

Chicago Hot Glass

Last weekend the Chicago Center for Glass Arts (http://www.chicagohotglass.com) invited glass artists throughout Chicago to join them for the Chicago Hot Glass Throwdown. People from first time glass art spectators to children urged by their parents, watched in awe as the artists created unique pieces. Besides watching experienced artists compete, adults had a chance to try glass blowing by creating an ornament. It was a perfect way to get an introduction to the art.
