Art gives attention to Women’s issues

The National Museum of Mexican Art is featuring a powerful exhibit, Rastros y Cronicas: Women of Juarez, which is shining light on an important women’s issue. The number of women killed in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico continues to increase. Artists portrayed their view on the violence against these women using traditional paint as well as detailed 3-dimensional displays. The pieces portray real women and girls who are either missing or lost their lives due to the violence in Mexico.

Body Art at Acceso Total Launch Party

Artists on-site at Spy Bar worked to the last minute to decorate the models shown. Their bodies were covered in glitter, paint and the Telemundo logo. The ladies walked around the launch party for Acceso Total, a new half-hour show anchored by Nelly Carreño.

Dia de los Muertos display

Earlier this month, the artists in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood opened their doors to the public. Art displayed ranged from one-colored prints to a headboard with a burned image of “La Catrina” — also known as death according to Mexican Folklore. Many unique venues, including a gym and people’s own apartments displayed the array of color popping out of the art. The streets were busier than usual on the sunny Sunday afternoon in October. This annual event also brings artists from all over the city to see the culture of 18th Street. More information about the Pilsen Open Studios is located at http://pilsenopenstudios.org/

Chicago Hot Glass

Last weekend the Chicago Center for Glass Arts (http://www.chicagohotglass.com) invited glass artists throughout Chicago to join them for the Chicago Hot Glass Throwdown. People from first time glass art spectators to children urged by their parents, watched in awe as the artists created unique pieces. Besides watching experienced artists compete, adults had a chance to try glass blowing by creating an ornament. It was a perfect way to get an introduction to the art.
